How can California motorists improve their driving habits?

On Behalf of | Jul 19, 2021 | Firm News |

Maintaining focus and driving defensively can help California motorists reduce the risk of accidents on highways and roadways, but are there other actions they can take when it comes to increasing driving safety? The Golden State is the most populous in the nation, making its roads not only crowded but also potentially dangerous.

The State of California Department of Motor Vehicles notes that while there is no one correct way to drive a vehicle, there are a few tips they can use to better handle their vehicles on highways and residential roads.

Avoid one-hand steering

Individuals experienced with driving may become so comfortable with the experience that they only use one hand for steering, but this can cause reduced control over a vehicle and give the driver less time to regain full steering ability in case of a traffic incident. There are several methods drivers can use to steer confidently, including:

  • Constantly keeping the hands at the 10 and 2 position
  • Using hand-over-hand steering
  • Keeping both hands on the wheel at all times

When traffic stops unexpectedly or other drivers cause an incident, other motorists have a greater chance of avoiding an accident when they have a firm grip on the steering wheel.

Prevent horn misuse

Some drivers only use the horn to vent their anger on other drivers. However, it is there for them to warn other motorists of a potential collision or if they believe a driver might not see them when backing. Using the horn in anger may only escalate incidents of road rage.

California motorists may want to review driving laws at least once a year to ensure they are acting responsibly behind the wheel. This can help reduce the risk of accidents and increase driver confidence.
